Since its foundation in 1911, the family-owned company Fredericia has built a strong tradition of craftsmanship and design, developed in close collaboration with a circle of internationally recognized designers. They all play a part in the design and craftsmanship brand Fredericia is today. Forming a creative culture characterized by integrity, artistic expression, material expertise and knowledge.
Encouraging conscious consumption has been at the heart of Fredericia's ethical values since its founding in 1911. In designing new products or re-engineering existing ones, the company adheres to several principles to ensure the circularity of its designs, including enabling material segregation and using leftover materials.
The new leather cushion for the J39 Chair utilizes leftover leather that couldn't previously be used in the company's own production due to irregular shapes resulting from the production of larger sofa pieces. The cushion is designed to incorporate a typical triangular shape of excess leather, which at first glance looks merely like a resemblance to the classic paper cord diagonals of the J39. By doing so, design choices are informed by the ambition to reduce production waste of high-quality materials.
To further increase the circular economy of the J39, Fredericia has launched a commercial Take-back concept centered around the chair. This concept extends the company's promise of long-lasting quality and above-average lifespan of its products and materials to its actual business model.
